Hour 11: Focus the Inquiry

·         What did you learn about teaching and learning?

How to focus the student’s inquiry, because it is not just answering questios but also understanding, it is important to help the students learn how to come up with good questions. Let the students figure out the answer to their questions; do not answer the questions for them.  The students will eventually ask more questions and answer them on their own. The teacher generally becomes a facilitator. Once the students began to ask questions they always have questions.  Using different criteria to help the students find the answers to their questions is a good idea. Give the students the opportunity to think about what they think before starting the lesson and this will allow them to be engaged and this could also allow some of the questions to be weeded out. This also allows the teacher to determine what level of thinking each student is on.  Focusing on the different aspects of the class will also determine what questions need to be used.

·         How will this impact your practice as a teacher?

Allowing the students to answer their own questions is the first step that I need to work on.  I always want to be able to give the students the answer and I can’t ever figure out what the best question to ask if they get blocked? I will really need to learn how to engage my students with good questions to get them to think about what a good question might be. Trying to decide what the results of what we want to know is a good starting point in helping the students with their questions.

  1. I think that giving students the opportunity to answer their own questions is a great way to have discussion within the classroom! When they voice their opinions to each other they can learn different view points and gain more knowledge. Learning how to focus their attention on one topic will be challenging but i like the way that you will try to implement this in your classroom. Being the facilitator of the classroom is something that will be required of us no matter what we are teaching and helps me understand how well versed we need to be in our subject area!

  2. Allowing enough wait time for the students to think about and answer questions is important. Allowing the students to use different criteria in finding their answers can be helpful. Teaching and using strategies to increase the student's meta-cognition can decrease the amount of questions students may have, while keeping them engaged at the same time.
